Queen's Day

Five properties in Amsterdam fit for a royal

We’ve already highlighted how 2013 is Amsterdam’s year and much of this is to do with Queen Beatrix’s abdication from the Dutch throne. Come the end of April she will pass the royal baton to her son Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and thus the Netherlands’ most famous national holiday, Queen’s Day, will become King’s Day. This year will see the usual festivities put on hold for a day of coronation celebrations and parties on 27th April but it’s certain that the country will still be painted orange with nationwide celebrations. It’s for this reason that 2013 could be one of the best times to visit the Dutch capital with your family and so we’ve put together a list of some stunning Amsterdam properties that are fit for any royal couple and their little princes and princesses.

A Perfect Family Penthouse

large-

Amsterdam boasts many beautiful loft apartments but only a small number are spacious and regal enough for a royal family. HouseTrip are proud to have a number of these on our books and here is one that is certainly worthy of a royal visit. With over 189m2 of space there is plenty of room to roam your temporary kingdom, which is the penthouse of a modern apartment block close to the popular Jordaan and Old West suburbs and overlooks one of Amsterdam’s famous canals. With a huge living area, a child friendly balcony and a slick designer kitchen, this is a luxury home that serves as a comfortable and convenient base for a family holiday in Amsterdam. Oh and did we mention there’s a TV in the bathroom? So that’s how royals like to relax!

One’s Royal Houseboat

Boat

When in Amsterdam, it’s considered the ultimate immersion into local life if you stay on a houseboat. And don’t be fooled into thinking monarchs aren’t ones for embracing how the locals live. Not that there’s much compromising when it comes to this spacious, light and artfully decorated family houseboat on a quiet canal in Amsterdam’s Old West. With a deck area and garden perfect for BBQs in the sun and a well equipped kitchen to become a King of, it will be hard to choose between watching the world cruise past your window or getting out and about to see the rest of Amsterdam that is on your doorstep.

For Kings and Queens of Design

For a very different Amsterdam experience – but one that is just as convenient and comfortable as any monarch would expect – seek out this two bedroom waterfront apartment in a modernist building designed by world leading architecture group MVRDV. The building has transformed this industrial area along the IJ River opening the doors for several restaurants and bars (many of them on boats) to open up close by and the apartment is perfectly positioned to explore Amsterdam-Noord, the city’s most upcoming area and home to family friendly film museum EYE and best of all you’re still only ten minutes away from Jordaan and Amsterdam’s 9 Streets area.

All Aboard One’s Sailing Boat!

Amsterdam Sailing Boat

Amsterdam is not just a home for houseboats and barges; there are other ways to enjoy on-the-water living in a very special and unique way. Of course, special and unique experiences are precisely what a royal family expects and deserves and that’s exactly what you’ll get if you climb and stay aboard Lauwerszee, a 4 cabin, spacious sailing vessel that spends half the year docked in the Houthavens port of Amsterdam. Surprisingly spacious inside and surrounded by water and beautiful views across the harbour you are less than ten minutes away from the centre of Amsterdam by public transport.

An Urban Palace in the City

Our final pick is a beautiful and comfortable home grand enough to house a royal family, including one’s extended relations. This historic home on Rozensgracht boasts three flours of beautifully designed rooms and character thanks to the exposed wood beams, lots of light and clean minimalist design. Found in the popular area of Jordaan close to Anne Frank House and Westerkerk, you can also find some of the city’s most loved boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops close by. With two kitchens, two living rooms and enough space to sleep up to 18 people comfortably you can bring all the family plus a few friends and enjoy staying in an urban palace close to Amsterdam’s key sights and landmarks.
