Sneaking in some sun and space to breathe is what we’re all about this month. Take your pick from uncrowded beaches in Sicily and the Algarve, Majorca’s peaceful mountains, Ibiza Town before it gets busy or pre-summer glamour in Antibes. And, if exclusive use of the world isn’t enough, try low cost late-spring holiday rentals in places where they’d normally rather wear knitted one-piece swimsuits than offer you bargains. But don’t hang about. We guarantee, nobody in Sardinia’s going to let you come stay for £12 a night in July and August – unless they’re blood relations, and even then…….
Sardinia has an average of nine hours’ unbroken sunshine every day in late April and May. Just about long enough to laze around on the beach, enjoy the pool and still have time to explore the famously lovely countryside. This two-bedroom villa is in the south of the island, close to the historic town of Iglesias and has plenty of space for four but only costs £50 per night. And, if you don’t want to share Sardinia, it’s still a bargain for two.
In the Tramuntana foothills on Majorca’s west coast, Valldemossa is the little village everyone always makes time to visit. It’s historic, ancient, almost impossibly pretty and only 30 minutes from Palma. But why make the drive when you can stay here? This beautifully restored, traditional village house is right in the heart of Valldemossa, surrounded by mountain scenery and close to the sea – temperatures nudge 70° and over in late-spring Majorca, only perfect for climbing, walking or sunbathing on your roof terrace. This idyllic home has room for five at just £77 per night.
Antibes is old-school Riviera glamour and we love it in late spring. It’s just a little too early for the billionaires, but the weather’s wonderfully warm and sunny. If you can drag yourself away from beaches, shops and endless restaurants and bars, April and May are enchanting in the mountains round Antibes too – you’re half an hour from Provencal legends, Grasse and Vence. This beachfront apartment is beautifully designed for four and costs just £111 a night.
Nowhere feels quite as summery as the Algarve right now. But it’s not summer. So you can have dramatic beaches, warm sea, fantastic seafood restaurants and ancient towns and villages virtually all to yourself. If you want to invite friends along, this stunning four-bedroom villa has room for eight, a private pool and spectacular panoramic coastal views It’s only 10 minutes from Faro and right next to the pretty town of Loulé. It probably shouldn’t only be £153 per night, but it is.
Vienna’s always lovely and even better when you’re only paying £99 a night for an apartment with a sunny private garden. Spacious and modern with beautiful wood floors and huge windows, this delightful home is designed for eight and minutes from the city centre. So, once everyone’s ‘done’ Vienna and eaten their body weight in Sachertorte, they can be back in no time and unwinding on the terrace as if one of the greatest European capitals wasn’t right on the doorstep.
Pretty Annecy might be in the Alps but it’s warming up nicely in late April and May. This cute apartment overlooks Lake Annecy towards the mountains and is ideal for four keen cyclists, walkers or climbers, perfect for a family and at just £84 a night, a wonderful romantic hideaway for couples. If it’s your first time in Annecy, prepare to fall in love with historic charm, little canals and bridges, elegant shopping, smart galleries and fantastic food.
Anyone who knows and loves Ibiza will tell you now’s the time to go. It’s busy and too, too hot in high summer. But April and May are warm and sunny with space on the beaches and perfect temperatures for exploring the island. This sleek, modern apartment sits between Ibiza Town and the Port, has views over the Mediterranean and sleeps four for just £109 per night.
Sicilians describe the Cefalù Coast as paradise and they’re spoiled rotten for stunning beaches – La Scala dei Turchi is on Sicily, enough said. This delightful apartment sits on the coast between Palermo and Cefalù, has its own private pool, spectacular gardens and sea views, all for only £65 a night. There’s room for four and the weather’s wonderful at the moment.
Seems everyone wants a little pre-summer sun, sand and sea right about now, so don’t expect these bargains to hang about for long. And if you aren’t ready to break out the swimmies and SPF just yet, several amazing cities are charging a lot less to visit this month too. Take a look at what’s on offer and tell us you aren’t seriously tempted.
