This month we went to meet Maria, one of our Hosts in beautiful Lisbon. She shared a few tips for working successfully with HouseTrip and keeping your Guests happy:
Do you use the Host app?
I’ve only had it for a month or two. I find it’s great when I’m not at home in front of a computer. It’s helpful because I know I’ll receive and be able to respond in time. Also easier if I want to show my property to somebody, I can go and straight away have the pictures to show. I also think it’ll be easier for when I go on vacations, and when I’m out, especially when I get busier in a few months for peak season.
What do you do to make your Guests feel comfortable when they arrive?
It’s really easy and you don’t have to do much. I like to show a map of the neighbourhood. It’s hard to find good maps of my local area, Bairro Alto, so I always give them a good map. I also give tips for restaurants and coffee places and local attractions. I like to be very friendly, obviously! I’ve got lots of good ratings as a result.
So, yes, I like to speak their language too when I can. I speak English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. And now I’m learning Korean but I don’t think it will be useful anytime soon. In 2 years I will put on HouseTrip that I speak Korean.
Sometimes I leave a paper with all the house rules, what to do with the garbage, electricity, transportation systems nearby – I think that is very important. I always tell them this, but it’s nice to have it written down. I always like to leave my contacts and the address of my home. I try to make sure that Guests know they can call whenever they need, and I always respond to their SMS. Now a lot of people come with mobile phones so it’s easy and not so expensive to communicate.
